Scientific American Magazine Collection

Scientific American is a popular-science magazine, published (first weekly and later monthly) since August 28, 1845, making it the oldest continuously published magazine in the United States. It brings articles about new and innovative research to the amateur and lay audience.

Scientific American (informally abbreviated to "SciAm") roughly has a monthly circulation of 555,000 US and 90,000 international as of December 2005. Though a well-respected magazine, it is not a peer-reviewed scientific journal in the sense of Nature; rather, it is a forum where scientific theories and discoveries are explained to a wider audience. In the past this target audience was other scientists in unrelated fields, but it is now educated general readers interested in science issues. The magazine American Scientist covers similar ground, but at a level more suitable for the professional science audience in much the same way Scientific American used to.

PC World is a global computer magazine published monthly by IDG. It offers advice on various aspects of PCs and related items, the Internet, and other personal-technology products and services. The magazine was founded by David Bunnell and Cheryl Woodard; its first editor was Andrew Fluegelman. The magazine's slogan is "Technology Advice You Can Trust" and it is known for criticizing poor computer products or companies, even at the risk of losing advertising revenue.

PC World's magazine and Web site have won a number of awards from Folio, the American Society of Business Publication Editors, MIN, the Western Publications Association, and other organizations; it is also one of the few technology magazines to have been a finalist for a National Magazine Award.

As of 2006, PC World's audited rate base of 850,000 makes it the largest-circulation computing magazine in the world.

Animation Magazine is a monthly publication covering the animation industry, including aspects of film and television animation, visual effects and video games.

Founded in 1986, the print magazine is published monthly and features articles on current animated movies, television series, short films, interactive titles and software releases from both major studios and independent producers. Make (or MAKE) is a quarterly magazine published by[1] O'Reilly Media which focuses on do it yourself (DIY) projects involving computers, electronics, robotics, metalworking, woodworking and other disciplines. The magazine is marketed to people who enjoy "making" things and features complex projects which can often be completed with cheap materials, including household items.

The magazine has photo essays on projects as well as regular columns on the world of technology and reviews of books and tools. Its first issue was released in January 2005 and has to date published eight issues. Bruce Sterling is a regular columnist for the magazine, as is Cory Doctorow.

The Primer section is a frequent feature teaching skills in areas as diverse as welding, electronics and moldmaking. Another frequent feature is the MakeShift competition, which presents a situation where someone has to confront a life-threatening situation with limited equipment.
